Now when one thinks of hypnosis the most common image that comes to mind is the magician on stage in front of an audience dangling a gold pocket watch in front of someones face. Hypnosis isn’t magic, it is actually just a mental state. The use of hypnosis with the intent of relaxation or for therapeutic reasons is called hypnotherapy.

Learning how to hypnotize yourself can be beneficial in many way not only does it help with relaxation but it also has been proven to help with habit control, age regression, fears and phobias, pain management, psychological therapy, skin disease, sports performance, weight loss, insomnia and even help with quitting smoking. Self hypnosis is known to help with stage fright, relaxation and physical well being. Most people who try to hypnotize them self often need the help from another person or devices called mind machines. Mind machines are devices that use pulsing sound and light to alter the brainwaves of the person using it.

Some people are still skeptical about hypnosis, some important things to keep in mind are that 1.) you are not asleep or unconscious, 2.) you will not lose control of yourself and 3.) you will not do anything you do not want to do. Step 1 is to get comfortable in a place where you are relaxed for the time you want to be hypnotized but will not fall asleep and will not be disturbed for the time. Step 2 is to decide why you want to hypnotize yourself. What do you want to accomplish with hypnosis? Step 3 is to close your eyes and forget all your anxiety, stress, and fears. Step 4 is to remove the tension and stress from your body. Imagine that you are pulling it out of you. Start with your toes and work your way up all the way to your head. Step 5 is to imagine yourself at the top of 10 stairs and as you walk down you slowly get submerged in water. Count down each step from 10 and feel the water slowly rise.

The last three steps are the most important to reaching your goal. Step 6 is when you start to try and solve your problems. Imagine there are 3 items at the bottom of the water, swim down and each time you get to an item tell yourself something positive about your problems or goals. Step 7 is to slowly rise out of the water by walking up the steps, as you walk up you may start to feel heavier so take it slow. Step 8 is when you get to the top step just stay there for a few minutes to get your self collected and when you are ready to wake up say “wake away”. Afterward you should feel relaxed and you have just learned how to hypnotize yourself.
